Korean Skincare: What Order Do I Apply Everything In?

The one rule to remember

There's one sentence that saves you most of the thinking: from thin to thick. That means liquid, lightweight textures first, then the heavier ones. The reason is simple – a rich cream settles on the skin like a film. Whatever you apply after it barely gets through.

Everything else in this article is really just applying that one rule.

The morning routine in five steps

  1. Cleanse – in the morning, lukewarm water or a mild foam cleanser is usually enough. Your skin didn't get dirty overnight, just oilier.
  2. Toner – restores moisture and prepares the skin for everything that follows. In Korea it's often patted in with the hands rather than wiped on with a cotton pad.
  3. Serum or essence – the part of the routine with the highest concentration of active ingredients. This is where it pays to choose carefully.
  4. Moisturizer – seals in everything before it.
  5. Sunscreen – the most important step of all, and the one most often skipped. Without it, the rest of your routine is working against something you create anew every day.

The evening routine

In the evening the focus is reversed: instead of protecting, it's about cleansing and rebuilding.

  1. Double cleanse – first an oil-based product for makeup and sunscreen, then a water-based cleanser. This is the step most often missing from European routines.
  2. Toner
  3. Serum
  4. Mask (1–2× a week) – after the serum, before the cream.
  5. Cream – in the evening it can be richer than in the morning.

Does it really have to be the 10-step routine?

No. The “10 steps” are a marketing image, not a law – and hardly anyone in Korea does them every night either. Four well-chosen steps that you stick to every day achieve more than ten that you give up after two weeks.

If you want to start small: cleanser, toner, cream, sunscreen. That's a complete routine.

The three most common mistakes

Too many new things at once

Introduce new products one at a time, one to two weeks apart. Otherwise, if your skin reacts, you won't know which product caused it.

Too little patience

The skin's surface renews itself in about four weeks. Before then, it's hard to judge whether a product suits you.

Water that's too hot

It feels thorough, but it draws moisture out of the skin. Lukewarm is perfectly fine.
